“Os impactos e transformações da ferrovia para o município de Passo Fundo (1920–1957)”

Abstract

The municipality of Passo Fundo is located in the northern region of the state of Rio Grande southern. Considered an economic exponent for the North region, the arrival of the railway in municipality at the end of the 19th century had a direct impact on the urban space of the city and its axis economic. Therefore, the growth of the city and the emergence of an industrial center is directly linked to the position of the railway line in the city, which enabled the emergence of towns, neighborhoods and industrial buildings that boosted population growth and demographic of the municipality of Passo Fundo. For this work we propose to analyze the historical process in which the railway plays a central role in the development of the municipality and its urban transformation, the delimited time frame corresponds to the moment of arrival of the tracks in the municipality in 1898, until the founding of R.F.F.S.A 1 in 1957, a period in which Brazilian railways were taken over by the federal government. For Miranda and Machado (2007), Passo Fundo would go through a period called Belle Époque Passo Fundense, the city from the beginning of the 1920s, went through a accelerated exponential growth, which is linked to the railway, the emergence of towns and large housing complexes, together with new industrial buildings, helped to reconfigure the city, expanding its extension. This growth expands to all sectors, social, cultural and economic.
